Leland Hulst

When he arrived in Portland in 1977, Mr. Hulst followed a family tradition which had begun in the previous century, as his ancestors relocated from shipbuilding in Nantucket to one of the Maine peninsulas north of Bar Harbor.  Cadillac Mountain is seen across Frenchman’s Bay from this custom cottage in Hancock Point, which he designed in 2002.   His practice has been based on a connection to the architectural history of the region, a living connection to sunlight and the outdoors, and inventive use of responsible building methods with energy-efficient, green design.
